April 2018 Wrap Up!

May 2016 Wrap Up!.png

Hello everyone! This has been a slow reading month for me as I’m nearing my IB exams and the end of school. I only read 5 books this month, so I really need to pick it up to meet my Goodreads goal!

I actually watched quite a few movies this month, I’ll list them at the end of the wrap up!

First up, I finally got around to reading, THIS IS WHERE IT ENDS by Marieke Nijkamp! I also read I HAVE THE RIGHT TO by Chessy Prout.

I’ve been seeing THIS IS WHERE IT ENDS everywhere for a while now so I’m so glad to finally have read it especially since the topic of school shootings is very prevalent now.

Similarly with I HAVE THE RIGHT TO, the topic of sexual assault is a very current topic and it was inspiring to read about the bravery that Chessy Prout displayed throughout the aftermath of her sexual assault.

I highly enjoyed ACE OF SHADES by Amanda Foody, as well as JEK/HYDE by Amy Ross and FATAL THRONE.

ACE OF SHADES was a delightful surprise for me this month and I absolutely loved reading it! I thought that JEK/HYDE was a tad predictable, even for someone like me who isn’t familiar with the original story. FATAL THRONE was interesting as I’m highly fascinated with everything involving King Henry VIII and his wives so this was a gem to read for me.

Some movies I watched this month including re watches are:

-Mulan and Mulan II

-Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

-Lady Bird

-Suicide Squad

-Call Me By Your Name

What books/movies have you read/watched this month?!

Shadowhunters TV Show Thoughts

Image result for shadowhunters

Hello! Welcome! In case you don’t know, Shadowhunters is the tv adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s hit series the Mortal Instruments. There was originally a movie version, called The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, but the series failed to make a sequel movie which I was quite disappointed about.

I watched the movie and thought that it was okay, but after watching season 1 of the tv show, titled Shadowhunters, I thought the movie was excellent as the shadowhunters tv show sucked big time in season 1.

The tv show made the movie look faithful af.

The show was renewed for a second season and a new writer was hired and I have to say that after finishing season 2, the show has improved! Hallelujah!

So here are some of my thoughts! And it’s okay if you disagree!

I love how in the poster Clary and Simon are looking straight at the audience and everyone else is looking to the side. Like what is Jace doing with his facial expression? I like the Season 2 poster a lot more! It’s the one on the right. Except what’s with Jace’s turned head when we can see everyone else’s face?

The acting has gotten significantly better, and I actually felt some emotions while watching! Some of the plot lines still felt strange to me and didn’t make sense but overall the writers are somewhat following the book plot.

If I watched this show without reading the books first I would say that it’s an okay show, but knowing the amazing books and what happens in them, the show still continues to disappoint me because the characters don’t match the ones I already know in my head.

There are major defenders of the show who bash on us book lovers and say that it’s an adaption, we can’t expect it to be exactly like the books. Pretty Little Liars is nothing like the books and is a great tv show. My counter to that is that the Pretty Little Liars books were not relatively known before the show. There wasn’t that big fanbase that The Mortal Instruments books had before the Shadowhunters show.

And it also has to do with the actors, if I feel like laughing at some of the lines and facial expressions in a solemn scene, then it’s not good. I think I can honestly say that if the actors were more like the book, and there was a totally different plotline I would still like the show. It’s not about the books at this point, I just want a decent show.

Now maybe I am extremely biased as a staunch supporters of Cassandra Clare’s books, but why mess with an already perfect book series that has amazing plot lines that could be followed in a tv show with an amazing result?

I just don’t understand why the show couldn’t have followed the books, it would have made a much better show. That being said I do think that season 2 has gotten a lot better and there have been some moments where I was actually like ‘Yes! That’s my Jace!’

The season 2 plot has also been following book 2 and 3 of the Mortal Instruments series a bit more. I don’t think this show will ever match some of my other favorite book to tv series favorites like Outlander, but I think I’ve come to tolerate the show.

Actually, you know what? I am looking forward to season 3 a little bit, so that just shows that I don’t dislike the show that much, after all, I watch it every week when it’s on. I’m excited to meet Sebastian in the next season!

Some things I really like!

Simon! I love him and all of this lines! Alberto Rosende is doing a great job! I also like some of the Jace moments. When Simon and Jace are together, like at the bar scene when Jace is giving Simon girl tips, the snarky Jace comes out a little and I loved it!

I also like the guy who plays Valentine, Alan van Spring. The other characters I’m coming to tolerate I think.

So fav character? Simon for sure

Least favorite? Hmm, though I love Magnus as a characters, I feel like Harry Shum is making him really dramatic and he talks very slow and grave all the time? I don’t dislike any of the characters actually, I do love my Malec and also gasp! What’s with the Rizzy going on?? Where’s my Sizzy??

Anyhoo, that’s all from me today…

What do you think?! Do you still watch shadowhunters? Do you love it, hate it? Let me know in the comments below!

Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Movie Review!

I saw this movie like 2 weeks ago, but anyway, there are my thoughts on this book to movie! Enjoy my rambling because that’s what this is!

After seeing the trailers for this I was so confused why Emma and Olive were switched. Like it makes nooo sense at all. It’s okay thought I’m over it.

In case you didn’t know, these peculiar children exist with different abilities and they live in time loops taken care of these human women who can turn into birds. In this case, our ymbryne is Miss. Peregrine. The evil monsters are called hollows and they’re peculiars gone wrong basically. The hollows need to hunt down the peculiar children to eat their eyes and turn back into a semi-human form.

How gross is that?! ^^^

I did love how faithful the movie was to the book actually and how it captured the feeling of it so well. Like I don’t know what jealous Enoch is doing but that’s a whole other thing. The fact that Enoch has a thing for Olive?? Who has fire powers which is still weird for me.

Also, at the end of the movie, when we saw the peregrine flying I was like aha! That’s not Miss. Peregrine, that’s her brother! But then the bird turned into Miss. Peregrine and I was like dang it, they’re only making it one movie?? To me it doesn’t seem like there will be more movies which also doesn’t make sense because I feel like this trilogy could have done great under Tim Burton as a franchise.

Overall I really liked it! If I were to rate the movie like I normally rate my books, solid 4 out of 5 stars. Good job Tim Burton!

Speaking of books I’ve read one this month so far. Still. I’ve been reading the Crooked Kingdom for two solid weeks and have made no progress. Thank you school and #IB.

Thanks for reading this review. Honestly I kind of just word vomited because this is my blog and I can do what I want jk. Ugh I’m so overwhelmed with school and stuff. Anyways, thanks for reading!

#growinguprussian // Childhood Cartoons

Prostokvashino

So my parents came to America from the Soviet Union as it was breaking up and I was born a few years later, so my childhood was a little different from the normal American.

I didn’t speak English until I was 4, and I was nearly put in the English as a second language program in elementary school because my English was that bad.

And now English is my favorite subject in school and I can barely speak Russian…it’s hard to hold onto a language when no one around you really speaks it except your parents, and not even then because my youngest brother doesn’t speak anything but English.

So these are some of the cartoons that I love and grew up on!

Nu Pogodi was the best show ever. It’s about this wolf who wants to eat this rabbit, but the rabbit always escapes so the wolf always says at the end of the episode, Nu Pogodi, translated it kind of means, wait up, but it’s basically like the wolf is saying just you wait rabbit. Now that I think of it, it’s very similar to Tom and Jerry.

Cheburashka! It’s about this cute little animal named Cheburashka who meets a lonely crocodile named Gena and then there’s this old lady Shapoklyak who is kind of like the villain who tries to thwart their adventures together. There’s this amazing birthday song that came out of this, if you search cheburshka birthday song on youtube you could probably find it.

Karlson! This is a hilarious cartoon about this man who can fly with this fan thing on his back, and his tagline is Karlson who lives on the roof. It’s really funny because this young boy gets this grouchy babysitter and Karlson keeps tricking her.

In English it’s translated to the Bremen Town Musicians I think. This is a great cartoon with a lot of memorable songs and I know there’s one song with one lyric that whenever it comes on my entire family sings it in a very loud and obnoxious voice.

Of course Russian Vinni Puh needs to make this list. It’s basically Winnie the Pooh but in Russian.

A lot of these shows I watched on VHS, but now we have a CD with a bunch of them that my six year brother watches, even though he doesn’t speak any Russian, he can understand a bit.

38 Papagai

It scares me that one day I might forget my language entirely, and that my children will probably never be able to speak Russian. I have a bunch of cousins who are really little though that live in an extremely Russian populated area about an hour from me, so they’ll probably marry Russian and carry it on, which brings me some relief I guess.

And that is all for today! Are there any Russian speakers reading? Did I miss any good ones?

P.s. Would you want to see more posts like this, about the different foods we have when we go over to my grandpa’s house and Russian restaurants and other stuff?
