Goodreads synopsis:

Would you trade your soul mate for your soul?

A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.

Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?

Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.

When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.

My Thoughts:

I’ve finally read Lord of Shadows! Hoorah for me! I don’t know why it took me so long or why I kept putting it off because it was amazing!

I loved reading about my old fam from TMI and the gang from TID were also mentioned throughout and my fav Jessamine was there too!

I love the Blackthorns and how much of a family they are, and hey guess what?! I’m finally starting to distinguish all of their names!

Helen and Mark are the oldest and they’re part faerie

Julian is the kind of patriarch and duh the main character of the book

Livvy and Ty are the twins who hang out with Kit

Dru is the sulky teen who always get stuck babysitting

And Tavvy is the baby 7 year old

I think that’s all right?

Anyway the romance and fighting and general badass-ery was all there and is it wrong that this Christina/Mark/Kieran love triangle is making me want Mark to end up with both of them? Threesome anyone? Cassie Clare even mentioned in the book itself!

Yay for LGBTQ-ness in the book also! I can’t figure Ty and Kit out, are they going to end up as parabatai or a couple? I don’t know!

Emma is such an amazing human and so cool with Cortana! Speaking of Cortana, that sword is powerful!

Can we also just talk about that ending!!!! OH MY GOD! I was reading then I stopped and re-read cause I could not believe my eyes. Oh yes Cassandra Clare has still got it ladies and gentlemen. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!

Verdict:

I devoured this humongous book and loved every second of it! I’m scared that I’m going to get bored of Cassie Clare and shadowhunter writing one day though, like I did with Uncle Rick and Percy Jackson books. Whatever though, for now I still like!

My Rating:

5 stars!

Caps and Exclamation Points! // Lady Midnight Review

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books

Publication Date: March 8, 2016

Page Number: 668

Format Read: Hardcover (Bought)

Goodreads Synopsis:

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

My Thoughts:

Ok, wow. I think this has been one of the strongest first books in a Cassie Clare series, largely because the protagonist Emma, is already a Shadowhunter, and as a result, the reader already is in the know with the world.

This book though! It tore at my heartstrings! And I loved the Blackthorns so much!

My only problem as that there are so many Blackthorns that I was a little like, who’s who.

Overall I loved it, though it took me a few days to read because it was so big and I’m in school for about 10+ hours every weekday so…

*Spoiler Section* (Warning: Spoilers + Extreme Non Comprehensible Fangirling)

So one thing that I was afraid of was that Johnny Rook was going to be the bad guy here, and it would play out similar to the Clockwork Trilogy in terms of betrayal, so I found it a relief that it was Malcolm.

But at the same time, I can’t be mad at Malcolm for doing what he did, because as Emma and Julian wonder themselves, would they do the same? They hope not but at the same time, Malcolm wasn’t evil, he was wronged by shadowhunters and was just trying to be with the girl he loved.

I also really just dislike the Clave and the Cold Peace and how annoying the Clave is sometimes.

Ok, here are some major wtf moments here: (Also spoilery)

a) Kit?! A Herondale!? What!?

b) Annabel is awake! (Cough cough, plot line for book 2)

c) Mark! and Emma!? How long will this go on in book 2!? Book 2 is I think Lord of Shadows…

d) Simon/Isabelle getting married! And possibly Jace and Clary too! Awww

e) parabati curse!? What!? Book 2 please explain more

Now it’s time for my thoughts on the ships and love triangles

Ok, I obviously ship Julian and Emma, BUT, I don’t like hate Mark and Emma, same thing with Kieran, Mark, Christina, and Diego, like Mark is good with EVERYONE!

Seriously though, there isn’t a love triangle, it’s a love hexagon! With Mark, Emma, Julian, Kieran, Christina, and Diego all in it.

But I don’t really have any main ships yet, but hopefully, book 2 will help develop those.

Honestly though, the first half of this book was just:

Emma: “I love Julian, but I can’t tell him cause he’ll be disgusted since he doesn’t feel the same way”

Julian: “I love Emma, but I can’t tell her cause she’ll be disgusted since she doesn’t like me like that”

*Facepalm from the reader aka me

Verdict:

A wonderful start, with a cliffhanger esque end that had me dying.

My Rating:

5 out of 5 stars! My first 5 stars given to a YA book this year! THANK YOU Cassie Clare for being awesome 🙂

Ok, so yeah, the excitement was a little real for this one, and it’s just a bunch of fangirling honestly, it’s not even a proper review since all I did was shriek in all caps everywhere and use a lot of exclamation points.

Please let me know your thoughts! Have you read this book!? What did you think!?

Stay awesome Sassenachs!-Calliope Fraser
