Sunday Teenage Musings: Invisibility, Boys, and Prom

Copy of Totally Should've.png

I’ve had a lovely 4 day weekend because of the snow and don’t really have much bookish things to talk about currently so I’m just going to post some of the thoughts that rattle around in that brain of mine.

Am I invisible?

I was in my school’s weight room the other day with a friend of mine and there were the usual football crew and other boys in the there. My friend and I were doing some abs, and these 3 boys kept playing with her and stealing her shoes and she stole their phones in retaliation.

No one looked at me, not even a glance. It wasn’t like I didn’t know these boys either, they were in my classes, knew my name and have had actual conversations with me. I mentioned my invisibility to my friend and told her that the boys were so flirting with her but she dismissed it.

The next time we were in the weight room, one of the boys kicked my shoe when we were doing crunches. Okay so I wasn’t invisible after all I guess, right? I guess my friend is just more of an attention people person, whereas I am more of a huddle in the corner of a room reading a book kind of person.

The point is, I’m fine with that. I was upset at first that I was the sidekick who wasn’t paid attention to, but I’m realizing that I’m fine with it, might even like it. Cause really I didn’t want the attention, I only thought I did, if that makes sense? I think I like the idea of things more than I like actually doing them.

(Cough cough boys. I like the idea of a boyfriend but do I necessarily want one?)

That also leads me to the topic of boys in general and prom. My junior prom is coming up in April and it’s taken my grade by a storm. Everyone is talking about it. Someone gets asked every other day it seems.

I suppose that makes sense, February, Valentine’s Day etc. there has to be a link there. At first I was like oh my god who’s going to ask me. And then I took a step back to assess my situation and realized that I wouldn’t want to be asked for the sake of asking.

I mean that I’d rather go with my friends who I’d have a better time with anyway because my date might not want to dance or be self conscious and it would just be awkward if I didn’t know the guy too much.

Not that I wouldn’t mind being asked either.

My mother says she’s sick of hearing about prom and that she doesn’t see a point in it.

I disagree. As juniors, especially IB juniors, we get so stressed trying to get good grades for college, and I think having a junior prom is a way to promote excitement and de-stress for a night.

And the thing is, I know my mom will make prom as hard for me as possible because that’s how she is, so it’s probably even better that I won’t have a date, right?

But I don’t want my mom to be the reason for me not having a date if that makes sense? But also who am I kidding I don’t really date period because of her. But also am I just using my mom as my excuse not to date? Thoughts in my brain people. Hmm I’m making a sexuality post next because I feel that I want to cause I’m confuzzled.

So anyway, I hope you enjoyed my musings, and have a super lovely day!

2017 Resolutions!

2016-resolutions

Hello! So it’s 2017 and it’s time to make some resolutions! I did pretty good with my 2016 resolutions and I’m hoping to keep up with my 2017 ones also!

Blogging resolutions

-honestly just keep this blog running at this point! I solemnly swear that I will not let my blog die!

-I also want to start getting more involved again in the community, commenting and liking posts. I used to be super good at this but with the 2016-17 school year, my community involvement has gone down sadly, but I want to get better

School resolutions

-ACT’s, SAT’s-honestly, I need to take them and get good scores for college!

-Apply to college-how scary is that?! 2017 is the year I’ll be applying to college! Crazy!

-Pass my IB exams- Seriously- also pass midterms coming up in like 2 to 3 weeks yikes!

-Pass junior year-that’s also a good one, but really I’m exaggerating, it’s more like survive junior year in one piece!

Personal Resolutions

-renew my CPR license, good thing the people in charge never tell me when to come in thx

-get a summer job, hopefully a lifeguarding job

-get my junior license and maybe a car?

-watch the Gilmore Girls revival

-Submit applications for a bunch of local writing contests and literary magazines

-Go to junior prom

-write more!

-read 100+ books!

-go to BookCon with my BFF who also reads!

And that’s it I think!

What are your 2017 resolutions?! I find it hard to believe that I’m 16 going on 17, (sound of music reference)!

2016 Resolutions Reflection

2016

As the 2016 year is coming to a close I thought I should reflect on how well I did on my resolutions. I did a 2016 Resolutions tag that you can find here and I reflected halfway through the year which you can find here.

My Bookish Resolutions were to read 135 books and log every book I read on Goodreads

I didn’t quite reach 135 books, I’ve read 113 so far, but I have logged every book I read in 2016 on Goodreads.

My blogging resolutions were to reach 200, and then maybe 300 followers, get better at graphics, write more discussion posts and host a giveaway.

I reached 200, then 300, then 400 and now am close to 500 followers, so check mark for that! I don’t have time to spend on graphics these days so I don’t know how much better I’ve gotten at them. I don’t think I’ve done that many discussion posts this year, but I did host a birthday giveaway in honor of my turning 16 in September.

My career and academic resolutions were to stop procrastinating, study more, not stress too much about school, pass my lifeguard exam, and get a job.

Yikes, I haven’t stopped procrastinating, or stressing, or studying more…I did pass my lifeguard exam and had a summer lifeguarding job, something I plan to do again this summer.

My personal resolutions were to write more, work out, watch Outlander, game of thrones, season 6 of Pretty Little Liars, stop biting my nails, and get a boyfriend jk.

I still don’t think I write enough. My working out is decent but could be better. I watched season 1 of Outlander and am nearly done with Season 2. I got the Game of Thrones book for the Holidays and am going to read it and watch the tv show in 2017 hopefully. I also finished all the seasons of Pretty Little Liars and am waiting for the second part of the last season. I kind of stopped biting my nails. I also put the boyfriend thing on in 2016 as a joke kind of, but I actually did date two guys in 2016 so check mark haha.

And that is all! I liked having these resolutions to reflect on my year, so I think I’ll do a similar post soon for 2017.

Let me know how well you did on your 2016 resolutions! (Or not well, that’s fine too)

My Dream Book Conference Panel!

My Dream Book Conference Panel!.png

Hello everyone! As part of a new project for Eventbrite, the largest self-service ticketing platform in the world that helps people find and plan events, I’ve been asked to share my dream bookish panel.

Given that I’m currently begging my mom to let me go to BookCon in a few months, this is actually perfect timing, because at least if I can’t go, I’ll have this dream panel still.

If you want to check out Eventbrite and their conference page to find local conferences in your area, the link is here.

Let’s get started!

Some of the authors who’d I love to see on a Young Adult books panel are definitely Sarah J. Maas (who I met at BookCon two years ago and was just lovely!) Leigh Bardugo, and Rick Riordan because if his humor is anything like his characters I’m sold!

Also it would be such a dream to meet J.K. Rowling and Colleen Hoover! They’re two of my favorite authors.

And then lastly it would such fun to meet Ransom Riggs and Tahera Mafi, book writing powerhouse couple!

Obviously I would never ask any questions during the panel because I’m pitifully shy but if I had someone else ask the questions I would instruct them to ask the following:

1. What did you want to be growing up?

2. When did the writer thing click for you?

3. Do you consider yourself “famous” in the bookish community?

4. How can I be you?

(Just kidding on that last one folks, but seriously, how can I be as cool and skilled as a writer as Sarah J. Maas???)

I think Margot from EpicReads would be a great moderator because I love her on the EpicReads channel so much!

It would be kind of cool to have an event/panel like this near closer to where I love, but nothing exciting happens where I live, so the next best place would be New York City I guess, oooh or even AT BookCon!

Also, side thought, I would love to see a Booktube Panel with Sasha, Jesse, Kat, Christine and Natasha, with Christine’s brother Paul as the moderator. Now THAT would also be super cool. (Also because Paulith is kind of funny and nice looking).

Let me know who you’d want to see in a bookish panel! Do you also obsess over and watch BookTube? Who’s going to BookCon in June?!

Thanks for reading!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them // Movie Review!

Image result for fantastic beasts and where to find them

Ahh I loved this movie! When I first saw the trailers I was pretty meh about the movie but then the day it came out I heard all of these good things about the movie and I got really excited and hyped to see it.

So when I got to the movies I was really upset and nervous because the screen that shows the movie was pixelated weirdly during the before movie stuff and I was worried that the movie would be like that and that was not okay with me.

Thankfully, just before the movie started the screen became clear and I could breathe again.

When the Harry Potter theme started playing I was so happy and excited and the nostalgia was real. I LOVED Eddie Redmayne as Newt. Honestly, Newt is such an adorkable nerd and Eddie embodied him perfectly! And then it was sweet to see Ezra Miller in the movie because he and the original Hermione, Emma Watson, were in the Perks of Being a Wallflower, and saw somewhere on instagram that when Ezra found out he got the part he called Emma Watson first.

Also, okay, I’m sorry, but I was not happy with Johnny Depp being in this, I really didn’t think that was casted right, sorry if that’s an unpopular opinion.

My favorite scene was in the bank with Newt and Jacob when they first meet. I almost laughed when Newt sat down next to Jacob and Jacob was like what are you here for, and Newt was like same as you, and Jacob was like oh you also want to get a loan to start a bakery?

Ah when Newt pulled out his wand to disapperate I was so happy because it was like I was back in the realm of Harry Potter.

I’m still confused as to whether the Ilvermorny houses relate to the Hogwarts ones or not, because I’m a Ravenclaw, but I have no idea what Ilvermorny house I’m in. Ooh when Queenie and Newt had that little Hogwarts vs. Ilvermorny bit, that was funny to see wizards and witches from different schools defending their school.

The fact that Dumbledore saw something in Newt made me almost tear up, the mere fact that Dumbledore was even mentioned made me tear up!

Also, those two plot twists! I called one, but I’m still annoyed at myself that I didn’t get the other one because it was soooo obvious! Ugh how did I not get that!

Fantastic Beats was definitely a fantastic movie and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next movies!

Have you seen Fantastic Beasts? Who’s your favorite character? Favorite magical creature from Newt’s suitcase?

HAMILTON Obsessed!

Image result for hamilton

I’m slightly drowning in high school over here and that’s why my blogging has been suckish as of recently. My apologies.

You may or may not have heard of this musical called Hamilton?

I’m obsessed. We’re learning about Hamilton and Jefferson and the Constitution and all that jazz in my IB History of the Americas class and my teacher played the Room Where it Happens and the 1st Cabinet Battle and I was so insanely happy at that.

Of course everyone else in the room was confuzzled and not singing along like me so I was the odd one out there.

I’m even doing Hamilton for my English project! I’m fake interviewing Lin Manuel Miranda and kind of doing a historical vs. ideological truth kind of thing with it. It’s hard to actually understand if you’re not in my English class haha.

So I finished the entire soundtrack about a week ago and my life has changed. I’m being dramatic here obviously. Previously I only really knew a few songs, like I was obsessed with Take a Break for a good few months, and I only knew Schuyler Sisters, Alexander Hamilton, my Shot, and Farmers Refuted.

Now though, I know every song and I love them all so much and my new favorites are Satisfied, Helpless, Non-Stop, You’ll Be Back and Right Hand Man.

I’ve gotten my brothers to sing along with me in You’ll Be Back, it’s really great. I never knew King George III could be so fun to sing as.

I’m also being forced to rake leaves because it’s that time of year and so I blast Hamilton obviously and I’m sure my entire family hates me because of it and when You’ll Be Back came up, my 6 year old brother did the da-da-das with me and it was great.

And to all the Hamilton haters out there, well, I have nothing to say to you because HOW?? How can one not like Hamilton? Okay, most not like it I can see, but like to outright hate it and refuse to listen to it at all and not give it a chance is just rude.

Who here also loves Hamilton?? Who’s actually seen it?? Cause that’s a dream of mine that probably will never happen.

–  ❤ Calliope

P.s. HA! Did you see what Trump tweeted about Hamilton the other day?? This is the President of the United States ladies and gentlemen

P.P.s. I can’t really sing that well, there’s a difference between liking to sing and actually knowing how to sing. Sadly I’m the former, but that’s okay!
