Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda Review/Discussion

Hi everyone! After wanting to read this book since it came out I finally have! I don’t know why I waited so long though, it was awesome!

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Publisher: Balzar + Bray

Publication Date: April 7th 2015

Page Number: 303

Format Read: E-Book (Live-Brary Borrowed)

Goodreads Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

My Thoughts:

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a quick read, and took me about 4 hours to read in one sitting. (I was in the car driving to Florida from New York, so yah, I had some time to kill).

I loved and connected with Simon instantly and his adorableness.

Spoiler Free:

So one of my friends recently came out to me and then I read this book kind of right after coincidentally, and it gave me perspective I guess…maybe helping me understand them a bit better? Hopefully.

I feel like Simon and Blue are gay couple of the year, and I truly think there need to be more LGBT books out there, because they can really help teens struggling.

If I was LGBT Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda could have even helped me come out to my parents and friends. Teens who read would really benefit from more diverse books that pertain directly to their real lives.

But enough of that. THIS BOOK! Oh the feels! No but really, when Simon was questioning whether Martin was Blue or not, I announced loudly to my family that if Martin was Blue I would die.

The cuteness in this book was the best. It dealt with a topic that you normally don’t see in YA but still managed to keep the awesomeness that the YA genre holds for me and managed to have me shipping people and yelling at my family about the book. (Which they totally didn’t appreciate).

Spoilers:

I felt like Simon should just have told Abby right away what happend with the blackmailing and stuff, Simon didn’t have to say it was because he was gay.

And then i thought that Abby didn’t have that big of a right to be that mad. I think she blew it out of proportion.

Who called it?? I didn’t! Though I wasn’t surprised that he was Blue because Simon noticed him during soccer practice and an alarm went off in my head that i ignored because Beckie so cleverly set it up that Bram might have a potential crush on Leah.

Omg! That explains why Bram was so uncomfortable when Simon told him to just ask Leah out already.

I really though couldn’t understand why Leah was so mad, honestly. And ack, the book should have been longer!

Is it weird if I say that I wanted to see more Bram/Simon making out?

Weirdly enough, I wanted to see them make out just as much as I would for a boy/girl pairing…which I suppose isn’t weird at all…

I love how I say ‘see’ when I mean read, cause I’m reading, not watching a movie.

I don’t know, I just love romance novels and making out and stuff with boys/girls, so why wouldn’t I want to see that with Simon and Bram????

Anyways, my friend is currently reading Carry On, and still have yet to read it, and you know what, Simon and Baz from Carry On, Simon and Bram…there’s a slight connection I feel…and Simon from Carry On is supposed to be gay Harry Potter, and Simon from this books is a Harry Potter fan…hmmm

I just really loved this book and it was just so lighthearted while dealing with stressful things and yeah, that’s enough of my incoherent rambling.

(I read people’s reviews and they’re so structured and professional and then you see mine and they’re just full of all caps and words that aren’t even real and just basically fangirling ha ha)

Screenshots of some of the pages I just had to screenshot cause the awesomeness of them:

Just the bottom of that one had me cracking up, with the nitric acid

What’s with the funny chem stuff!? No but seriously, i read this one aloud to my family in the car and Not. One. Of. Them. Laughed.

Either my sense of humor is strange or they were ignoring me, or they have no sense of humor.

Verdict:

The perfect blend of sarcasm and adorableness! Becky Albertalli has created a beautifully heartwarming story about a topic that needs to be wrote about more often.

Rating:

5 out of 5 stars!

Did you predict who Blue was? Was Simon an idiot for not figuring it out? Are you excited for the companion that Becky is writing!? Who wants to see more Simon/Blue making out!?

  1. Loved your review! There is absolutely nothing wrong with capital letters and fangirling haha! I did predict who Blue was, but I definitely doubted my guess right up until the last minute. OMG though I did not know that Becky Albertalli is writing a companion book – is it more Simon and Blue?? 😀

  2. Ooo great review! 🙂 I already have this book but I haven’t got to it yet. Hopefully I’ll read it pretty soon. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I definitely agree, there should be more LGBT books out there.

  3. I’m so glad you enjoyed it – I loved this book. After Fangirl it made me smile the most of everything I read last year. I did guess who Blue was, but not until quite near the reveal and then I was really pleased because it meant I could be a bit smug that I called it right too – haha! 🙂

  4. I didn’t know that there would be a companion to this book! SO AMAZING. Ahh, I’m also giving it five stars. 🙂

And hey, even when other people’s reviews are more professionally structured, I love yours, too! You always come across really genuine and excited. ❤

    • I could be wrong but I took a peek at becky’s twitter and she hinted at it, so we’ll see I guess. Ha ha, thanks! I always get so excited about books that I love and I guess it shows in my reviews. How funny that we read simon at the same time though ;P

  5. Wait wait wait, she’s writing a companion novel?!?!?!?!?! HOW do I not already know these things? Jeez I need to learn to research or something.

I DID call who Blue was, though I couldn’t remember the kid’s name when I was trying to figure it out later. SOSOSO happy with that, too–I was rooting for it to be him!

I feel like you and I were discussing this on goodreads…. >.> Probably not, but one of the people I buddy read this with also mentioned feeling as if Abby didn’t have the right to be so angry about that.
